Beauty image and content guide

This guide covers the mandatory requirements for onboarding beauty articles to Zalando. Understanding and complying with these content and image standards is essential. If you don't meet these requirements, your articles will be rejected and you will experience delays in going live. 

When submitting beauty articles, you must comply with specific attribute requirements for product safety, ingredients and warnings.

The following attributes are mandatory for beauty articles. You must provide them as free text in the local language of your intended market (e.g. Spanish for the Spanish market) or in English. Zalando backfills all other languages using AI translations.

• Product description: Explain what the article is and its purpose (maximum 400 characters).

• How to use: Provide a comprehensive description of how to apply or use the article.

• Warnings: Include relevant information on restrictions or risks regarding the use or handling of the article. You must translate this for each country. If the article has no warnings, write: ‘No warnings in the field’.

• Ingredients: List the ingredients in the article using the International Nomenclature for Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI) format.

• Avoid permanent claims: Targets and eliminates wrinkles, stimulates natural cell renewal, boosts skin’s natural structure, promotes skin regeneration, inhibits hair loss, supports natural immunity, less prone to aging and imperfections, sweeps away free radicals.

  • Use instead: Skin feels smoother, hair appears lighter, lips look fuller, for more radiant-looking skin.

• Avoid medical claims: Cures, rejuvenates, transforms, alleviates.

  • Use instead: Soothes, moisturises, hydrates, cleanses, repairs.

• Volume indication (ml/grams): This is mandatory if applicable. We need this data to automatically generate the base price. Without this information, your article cannot go live.

• Material information: Beauty textile articles (e.g. make-up removal cloths) must include a material composition in percentage.

• Cosmetics symbols: Include applicable symbols on packaging and articles (e.g. date of minimum durability, period after opening, reference to enclosed information).

• CE labelling: This is mandatory for all beauty electronics.

• Animal welfare policy: You may only source animal-derived materials from domesticated farmed species as a by-product of food production. Materials from wild animals or species listed on IUCN and CITES are strictly prohibited.

This section covers specific image requirements for beauty articles. For full technical image requirements (aspect ratio, file size, background colours and AI labelling), you must adhere to the general Zalando image guidelines. 

The table below outlines the specific image counts needed for the beauty assortment. Duplicating images to meet minimum requirements will lead to an article rejection.

In addition to standard primary packshots, we exclusively permit the following visual elements for beauty articles to enhance the customer experience: 

• Ingredients: Permitted, provided they accurately reflect the scent or composition of the fragrance/product (e.g. rose imagery for a rose-scented perfume).

• Swatches: Colour or texture swatches are permitted as additional views.

• Model views: Before/after model views and celebrity models are permitted if they add direct value to the customer. Ambient or mood images are also allowed as additional views.

Articles will be rejected if images contain the following:

• Unnatural photoshopped backgrounds.

• Articles or items in images that are not included in the delivery.

• Text information (boxes, logos, background text) within the images or around the article (We use the same images across all country channels, so text must be avoided).
